Anxiety
Anxiety is your body’s natural response to stress. It is connected to one’s feelings of fear and worry about the future. Starting a new job, going on a date, and giving a speech are all situations that may cause most people to feel nervous or fearful. For some people, those feelings do not go away, even after they complete the activity that was the source of their original stress. If these feelings become extreme, last for longer than six months, and are interfering with your life, you may have an anxiety disorder.
A normal amount of anxiety motivates us to work harder so we can accomplish what we set out to do. This feeling comes and goes, but it’s meant to inspire us – not debilitate us. There are several different anxiety disorders. Anxiety is felt both in the mind and the body with a number of somatic symptoms that are connected to the body becoming stuck in a “fight or flight” reaction.
Symptoms of general anxiety:
- Rapid breathing
- Increased heart rate
- Trouble concentrating
- Restlessness
- Difficulty falling asleep
- Worrying
- Rumination
- Fear
