Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar Disorder is a serious mental illness that is characterized by extreme changes in mood, from depression to mania. Between these two states, someone may experience normal moods. Since this disorder is characterized by extreme changes in mood, it can lead to risky behavior that is damaging to one’s career, relationships, and can lead to suicidal tendencies if not treated.
During an episode of mania, you may experience an emotional high characterized by three or more of these symptoms:
- Increased activity, energy, or agitation
- Increased self-confidence (euphoria), and
- Exaggerated sense of well-being
- Increased Talkativeness
- Racing thoughts
- Impulsivity
- Distractibility
- Decreased need for sleep
- Poor decision making that can result in risky sexual behavior, buying sprees, foolish investments, and drug use.
During a major depression, episode symptoms impact one’s ability to complete day-to-day activities related to school, work, social activities, and relationships. An episode will include five or more of these symptoms:
- Depressed mood characterized by feeling sad, hopeless, empty, tearful, or irritable
- Loss of interest or pleasure in most activities
- Insomnia or sleeping too much
- Restless or subdued behavior
- Fatigue or loss of energy
- Feelings of guilt or worthlessness
- Decreased ability to think or concentrate
- Significant weight gain or weight loss
- Thinking about, planning, or attempting suicide
