Cognitive Behavior Therapy

Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT)

What we think (our cognitions) affects the way we feel and what we do (our behavior). If we want to change the way we feel and the actions that follow, that we need to change the way we think. This is the basic premise behind Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).

CBT is a short-term, goal-oriented treatment for many mental health challenges. It is popular and effective. The goal is to help you change patterns of thinking or behavior that are contributing to one’s difficulties. CBT helps people focus on their thoughts, beliefs, attitudes, and images that they hold (their cognitive processes) and how these processes are connected to how they behave and deal with emotional problems.

Core principles of CBT

  • Psychological problems are based on unhelpful or faulty ways of thinking
  • Psychological problems are based on learned patterns of unhealthy behaviors
  • People suffering from psychological problems can learn better ways to cope with them which will relieve symptoms so they can become more effective in their lives.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is effective for a wide range of problems including anxiety and depression disorder, alcohol and drug use problems, relationship and marital problems, trauma, eating disorders, and severe mental illness.
