Gender Dysphoria
Gender dysphoria is the distress a person feels due to a mismatch between their gender identity and their sex assigned at birth. For example, a person who has the physical traits of a biological man may identify as female. This can be accompanied by an intense desire to be seen and accepted as a female and to have a female body. The experience of one’s body not reflecting their true gender can result in severe distress, depression, and anxiety.
Although children as young as four may express feelings or behavior relating to gender dysphoria, many may not until they reach puberty or even later. For some children experiencing puberty, they may feel they do not identify with their own body.
