Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy (TF-CBT)
Trauma-Focused Cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT) is an evidence-based treatment model that is designed to assist children, adolescents, and families overcome the negative effects of traumatic experiences. This method has been proven to be effective at for single or multiple complex traumas.
Parents and children are taught skills to better process the overwhelming thoughts causing stress, anxiety, and depression relating to the traumatic experience. It can help people manage difficult emotions in a healthier way. The core components of TF-CBT include:
- Parenting and psychoeducational skills
- Affect regulation
- Relaxation
- Trauma narrative
- Cognitive processing of the trauma
- In vivo master of trauma reminders
- Child-parent sessions
- Enhancing future safety and development
TC-CBT uses Cognitive-Behavioral, Humanistic, and Family strategies. The interventions are particularly tailored to the needs of children and adolescents who are experiencing psychological and emotional difficulties as a result of trauma. The treatment approach is meant to be short-term and generally lasts no more than 16 sessions.
