Strength Based Therapy
Strength-Based Therapy guides participants towards retelling their personal history through the lens of the survivor, rather than the victim, by emphasizing one’s strengths and survival skills, rather than weaknesses. The goal of this form of therapy is to help one realize they already have the strength and skills to deal with the tough situations in their life. It helps people build their resourcefulness and resilience.
Through adversity, people discover their inner strength. How people deal with life challenges is impacted by their mindset – a position of strength or deficit. Those with a strength mindset can focus and use their strengths, while those with a deficit mindset focus on their flaws and weaknesses.
Strength-Based Therapy is used to help people with emotional distress and poor self-esteem that can result from abusive relationships. It is also used to help people with more serious mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, trauma, and schizophrenia. It can help one build confidence and reduce the stress of living with different mental health challenges. Strength-based counseling is a form of positive psychology and has been incorporated into a number of other approaches.
