Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
OCD is an anxiety disorder that is characterized by uncontrollable, unwanted thoughts and ritualized, repetitive behavior you feel compelled to perform. You may realize that your obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors are irrational, but still are unable to resist them.
OCD Obsessions involve uncontrollable and unwanted disturbing thoughts, images, or urges.
Common obsessive themes:
- Contamination
- Accidental Harm to Self or Others
- Exactness and Symmetry
- Forbidden Thoughts
- Need for Perfection
OCD Compulsions are repetitive behaviors or mental acts that are used to try and control the obsessions.
Common compulsions are:
- Washing or Cleaning
- Checking
- Ordering/Arranging
- Counting, Tapping, Touching or Rubbing
- Mental Rituals
OCD often begins between ages seven to 12. Up to half the adults who have OCD say it began when they were in childhood. This disorder is more common in boys than girls in childhood, but more common for women than men in adulthood.
